Emo . . . . . . . ?

I don’t really know what emo means. (I’m old.) It seems to have something to do with hair in your eyes and square bulky glasses. But it must be more than that?
Wow. I’ve never gotten so many answers to a question on here!

Emo stands for emotional. The stereotype of an emo usually includes a person that self-mutilates themselves such as cutting, but to be emo does not necessarily mean that they must inflict harm upon themselves. For many it is just a style or type of music that they listen to. The style is includes skinny jeans and the hair and glasses you described. Emo music would include bands such as My Chemical Romance.

the word emo refers to ‘emotional’. it is a name for emotional people. it can also mean that it is a person who cuts themselves. the hair and glasses u speak of are part of their look.

nope thats pretty much it. for some dumb reason people seem to think that anybody with "suare bulky glasses" and hair in their eyes needs to have a lable.

ok you need to completely ignore whoever "millyd" is. it has nothing to do with believing in death or not

Emo started as a punk movement. It was emotional punk with more melodic guitars and was usually acoustic (Dashboard Confessional). It’s own style evolved from it. People on the internet started using it to make fun of people who act emotional in a negative way. The original meaning quickly dissolved into an insult, but the music’s not that bad.

Emo (from emotional) is a slang expression used to describe a range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music and its related scenes. The word "emo" may be used as a noun to identify a member of the emo scene, as an adjective to describe a certain style of fashion or music, or even to describe a state of experiencing unhappiness, loneliness, depression or melancholy (to feel "emo"). But the truth is that a definition of emo doesn’t really exist; it means different things for different people. There are hundreds of definitions made up by people but not one of these can describe every single person, that is because the emo hair style and emo style in general changes, whether we’re talking about the emo fashion, emo hair, the emo girls and emo boys always alter their appearances. Emo can be a term used to describe culture, including music, day-to-day activities, fashion and appearance. Many people are really confused about what emo actually is; especially those who have stereotypical views against the cultural movement. However, it is important to realize that emo today hasn’t got the same meaning as in the 80s; the term was ’stolen’ if you want. For example, in 80s, people who had today’s emo hair weren’t called emo. Emo is an expression; a way of life that brings out your emotions. Why judge them? You don’t know them. Originality is what makes emo.

For me Emo is mostly a genre of music…yes I do have the "square bulky glasses" but Im 23 and Ive been wearing them since I was 16..years before this whole emo trend started. I think that to the teen generation emo music is the kind of sub culture like seattle music was back in the early 90’s and with that everyone was wearing the grunge look. With emo its basically the same thing they listen to the music and dress a way that expresses it. If you wanna listen this is my favorite "emo" song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMwI1DlZpyY&feature=related Its something corporate’s konstantine.

emo is a style of music. it’s an abbreviation of the word emotional, but has nothing to do with depression, suicide, cutting, or any other psychological problems since these were all around before the word itself.

i suggest wikipedia for more of a history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo

personally, i’m sick of children on the internet arguing about this topic. for many, it has become derogatory and a way to insult someone who you think is sad or weak.

    Hey,
Many people have a different view on what emo means now adays however ‘emo’ started off as emotional hardcore a sub genre of rock music, this ‘emo’ genre had more emotionally touching lyrics etc.
Since becoming a sub genre ‘emo’ has seemed to have spurred off and gone into a sterotype for people with unique styles.
Many people called ‘emo’ dont like being called emo and dont want to be called emo.

    That is my interpritation,
    i hope this has helped.

Emo is a music genre. It is usually related to emotional lyrics in music that tends to be called screamo. It is a popular and quick growing genre. It is also partially a fashion that is considered to be people with black hair that covers one eye and that may have hilights with bright colors like bleached blond, red, pink, yellow, green, blue, etc.. Emo boys tend to have longer hair with spikes in the back and girls have major layers up high giving a short hair look with a thinner long straight layer. Some emo girls have longer or shorter hair, but there are many ways to wear that kind of hair and to have it styled in a way to be considered emo. Most emo kids now-a-days tend to wear a lot of eyeliner in solid black lines (boys and girls) and the girls ocasionally wear bright shades of eyeliner (usually pigment) they also wear studded belts, thick glasses, usually square-rimmed, but not always, skinny jeans, classic vans slip-ons (usually checkered), band tees, some have tatoos, jackets with skeletons, wrist bands, classic chuck taylor converse (usually in solid colors but any style, including hi-tops, low cuts, etc.) etc.. Emos enjoy to take black and white photos and tend to be very creative and love art. Many emo kids can say that their iPod is "a 5th limb" and totally attached to them because they love it. Many emos are accused of being whiny, emotional, self centered, poem writing, sad song writing, tight pant wearing, losers. They are also accused of self-mutilation, aka cutting themselves. But the reality is that most emo kids are fun people if you get to know them, quiet and shy, and DO NOT CUT. Another type of people, alot like emos, are goths and scene kids. Scene kids dress the same but are usually more fun loving and more lively. Goths wear more victorian styled clothing including chockers and all black. Some people just don’t understand these kinds of people but that’s because they just don’t know about them. When your educated, you tend to get them better.

PLEASE VOTE BEST ANSWER I SPENT ALOT OF TIME AND MOST OF MY KNOWLEDGE ON THIS SUBJECT ON THIS QUESTION!!! I WORKED VERY HARD!! :D :D :D

ok here is the real truth. It’s nothing but a label used to classify someone. There are however different meanings for the term emo. It started as a genre of music in the 1980’s but later became a style as well. It refers to someone with hair long in the front of there face but it doesn’t have to be in the back. (most of the time black) Skinny jeans are also popular and band shirts. You may hear that we are people who cut ourselves or are always depressed which is nothing but a stereotype because I have never cut and I am happy with my life and the way I am now is just who I fell I am. Like everyone else.
