Clothing and Fashion Updates
When people think about how to dress emo, they often get the image of a teen in black pants that are really tight, some non-descript shades, and possibly a shirt with the name of a really depressing band on the front. Many people see the whole emo trend as simply some kids trying to be unique and ending up looking alike. Of course, that is what just about any fashion is, right?
People living the emo lifestyle are quick to point out the roots of emo in punk bands that originated back in that strange time we call the 1980s. Music that looks at the inside of the singer instead of just screaming out a bunch of lyrics brought about an emotional attachment between bands and fans. This connection at a deeper emotional level played a part in the coining of the “emo” term.
Of course, the emo genre is about rebelling and going against the norms. Sometimes this is done to shock others, but some just are comfortable with a lifestyle of wearing their emotions on their sleeve. Besides using music as an artistic outlet, writing original poems and music are also a popular way to express deep emotions. Others go the more traditional route of drawing or painting images to represent what they feel they have going on inside.
A stereotype has developed that paints every person who enjoys emo as a melancholic, self absorbed individual. Certainly this is no more true than making a broad and sweeping generalization about any group. There will always be individual differences in any group. Emo clothing, although similar enough to be cast into its own sub-genre, is a wide enough category that individuals can pick and choose what they prefer.
The most common colors seen in emo clothing are black, khaki and sometimes brown. Color is often brought to the look with wristbands or eyewear of various colors. Piercings are also popular among many emo individuals. Closely related terms that you may want to explore might be gothic clothing and indie clothing. Both of these are often lumped together into the emo clothing category. Actually, any of the three may be listed under any of the three categories, often incorrectly.
